Illustrating Creative Passion

We deliver thought-provoking, theoretical and conceptual information each session, but an important part of building your skills involves doing. Every Session you’re invited to take part in a community project, and in so doing build your skills. Regardless of your experience level, it’s a great chance to expand your portfolio, and get feedback from your peers.

Post Your Projects in the Comments Below

Take the knowledge that you gain throughout this session and apply what you learn. Post your project in the comments below. We’ve set up the comments so that image URLs can be added. Be sure to leave your thoughts and insightful critique of the work posted, which will help everyone improve their work.

We’ll be selecting a handful of prominent projects to promote in our final day Session Wrap, so be sure to submit your project before June 25th for consideration.

Project Brief

In this session’s project the brief is to create an illustration that communicates on a gut emotional level. Capture raw feelings as you illustrate on the theme of “Creative Passion.” Dig deep into your core as an artist and communicator to illustrate the gritty essence of artistic feeling.

Heat up your solution with ardor, intensity, and fervor. Or show how you control your excitement and temper your passions with more restraint. You may feel more comfortable with warm sentiment or a more restrained geometric spirit. Show how either your “creative passion” is more controlled or how you let loose a relentless blazing visual rage when illustrating. Show us your artistic spirit, represent it with a discernible metaphoric image, or impassioned colorful storm.

Style and Format

There is no limit in style. We look forward to seeing a wide mix of approaches. Here are some possibilities though:

  • You could create the gritty essence of your creativity as a a digital painting in Photoshop.

  • Draw an intense firestorm of creativity and then finalize it as a vector illustration in Illustrator.
  • Utilize your favorite 3D software to communicates your artistic spirit.

Final format on this project is really open. We’d like to see final art as 600 pixel wide JPG or larger though. Also, include a description of your illustration, and how you conceptually illustrated “creative passion” in this work.

Skill Building

This project will build your skills with creating illustrations based on a theme. Conceptual solutions – the thought behind your work – is an important aspect of becoming a professional illustrator. You’ll also get to put into practice some of the theory you’ll learn in this session and work on your digital illustration craft.

Feedback and Positive Criticism

It’s just as important to leave helpful tips, suggestions, and positive feedback for your peers’ work, as it is to complete the assigned project. We’re looking to create something much like in illustration or design class, where you post your work up on a board (in this case, the comments are the board) and everyone can critique the work.

Keep in mind that professional decorum, insightful opinions, and positive suggestions will be appreciated by all. Now let’s get to work on illustrating with passion, and post some work for review below.

Inspiration came from my new hero, Ninoy Aquino.

that looks good, but you might want to try:

      1) use a color palette, so before you start you may want to choose some colors that reflect the feeling you want to give your art

      2) use shadows, that makes an illustration much more lively.

Here is some digital art I made a while ago for the wallpaper competition on the marketplace. At the moment this is the best I can make, is there anybody who could give me some tips so I can improve?

What I like about this image is that it actually has a story, and I think I managed to make it clear. Also this portrays what the creative world is, empty and renewable.

      thanks a lot,
      Paul

        Hi Paul,

A tip I would give you is to think about composition a bit more – where you are placing the main elements of your picture to give it balance and make it a little more dynamic, Also where you are leading the viewers eye can also help you convey your story and different emotions. Hope this helps.

Color pallets are the main source of where I build my work from. Some-times I just create a peice just from a color scheme I saw. Theres a great website for not only creating your own color schemes, but also checking out some others that work as well.
